Labour movement leader Zwelinzima Vavi admitted in hospital after testing positive for COVID-19

Prominent labour movement leader Zwelinzima Vavi has been admitted to the hospital after contracting COVID-19. Irvin Jim who is Vavi’s long-time trade union comrade confirmed this on social media on Sunday evening.

On his post on Twitter he wrote:

Comrades, friends in the recent past all of us had to contend, in NUMSA, SAFTU, SRWP, UF with sad news that one of our own leader Zv (Vavi) tested positive with this notorious global epidemic (Covid–19), He is admitted we wish him victory and his family against these notorious virus [sic],”

The revelation came after Vavi, the general secretary of SA Federation of Trade Unions, announced on Thursday that he had tested positive for the highly infectious coronavirus. The firebrand leader on Saturday released a video of himself in which he was heavily sweating.”

Vavi later revealed that he had no idea how he became exposed to the virus.

“All I had was a flu from Friday and it got worse by Saturday and Sunday and yesterday I went to test, just to be on the safe side, not that I had any of the signs …” he said.

“The last thing I was expecting was to test positive but there you are. And it shows you the reason this thing is so dangerous is that you take it lightly.

“Even now, I feel absolutely fine and better than any other day of the past five days and (yet) they called to say ‘you are positive, you must go to self-isolation’,” he said.

According to Vavi he had been homebound since the lockdown came into effect last Friday and had only attended a political and ideological meeting of Saftu, two days before the lockdown

He also said he had gone for a coronavirus test on Saturday but was turned away because he did not have a fever.

We wish him well….
