ANC MPs accuse Zondo Commission of overreaching

African National Congress (ANC) Members of Parliament (MPs) have accused the Zondo Commission of inquiry of overreach – for suggesting that Parliament consider allowing opposition parties to chair some of its committees.

With the exception of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, all committees are chaired by members of the ruling party.

The rules sub-committee on Friday, however, dismissed the commission’s recommendation – calling it a non-starter.

The Zondo commission of inquiry found the Fifth Parliament wanting in how it conducted oversight and ignored warnings of state capture.

But ANC MPs on a rules sub-committee tasked with implementing recommendations for better oversight – have dismissed the suggestion of changing its rules to give opposition parties more opportunity to chair committees.

The ANC’s Richard Dyantyi said this would not necessarily lead to better parliamentary oversight.

“This is really an overreach. The commission can not dictate to the legislature.”

“Unless there’s a coalition government people can share committees. That one obviously is a non-starter – that recommendation,” said the ANC’s Hope Papo.

Chairperson of the rules sub-committee Doris Dlakude said the matter was a political one, and that the recommendation would merely be noted.
