Zodwa Wabantu turns up the AMC party

Popular Mzansi socialite Zodwa Wabantu brought some va va voom to the African Movement Congress (AMC).

She has been the party’s ambassador for only two weeks and AMC is growing and launching new branches.

AMC secretary-general Jeremiah Gwadiso said bringing Zodwa to the party was a strategic move to get support from people who ordinarily would not vote.

He said Zodwa’s appeal and celebrity status is what the party needed as it prepares for the 29 May elections.

“We went for her because she’s a crowd puller. Nobody can deny that. People love her and she knows how to respond to her followers. We know that some people have negative things to say about her, but we are looking at the positive side,” said Gwadiso.

The entertainer and businesswoman told the publication she did research on political parties and economies around the world before joining AMC.

“Let me be honest with you. Our country is going down the drain. I did research about other big countries and how they are managing the economy. I found that AMC’s policies, under the leadership of president Roy Moodley, spoke to me,” she said.

She said AMC is the only political party to rescue Mzansi from its challenges.

“When I talk to people, I tell them we need to rescue our country and I tell them about my reasons for supporting AMC. All of them agree to support AMC,” said Zodwa.

Gwadiso said membership has been growing since Zodwa joined the party and AMC has been able to penetrate areas they never thought they’d go into.

He said the other reason they went for Zodwa was to show that the party was supportive of the entertainment industry, which is neglected in Mzansi.

“As you know, nobody cares about artists. It was our way of showing artists that we care about them. You will know that in the Eastern Cape we went for Vusi Thanda (former Emzini Wezinsizwa actor) as our premier candidate. The entertainment industry is close to AMC’s heart,” he said.

He admitted that people in rural areas were reluctant to accept their ambassador because of who she is and how she dresses.

“We are not worried about that. We are happy as long as she gets us the numbers. As elections are drawing near, we don’t have time to argue about people’s personal choices. How she dresses is her choice, and it’s putting bread on her table,” said Gwadisho.
