Zandile Gumede must be replaced by a woman ANCWL demands

Former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede must be replaced by another woman. That’s the demand made by the ANC Women’s League.

Its national leadership met with party officials in KwaZulu-Natal to discuss Gumede’s axing. The ANC has fired the entire executive committees of both the eThekwini and Msunduzi municipalities over poor performance.

“We’ve made our request to the leadership of the ANC to say we’ve seen since 2016 there seems to be a regression,” said ANCWL Secretary-General Meokgo Matuba.

“Therefore we are requesting that the leadership of the ANC — when they do or deal with replacements — that women should be replaced by women, not men.”

On Tuesday, ANCWL president Bathabile Dlamini said the league was unhappy with the culture of easily purging females from positions they occupy.

Dlamini warned the governing party must be careful or it could risk losing women to a breakaway party. The meeting to decide on the new mayoral candidates for eThekwini and Msunduzi is expected to happen on Thursday.
