Justice committee to visit Wynberg Magistrates Court in wake of deadly shooting

Justice committee to visit Wynberg Magistrates Court in wake of deadly shooting! Parliament’s portfolio committee on justice and constitutional development is planning a visit to the Wynberg Magistrates Court, following a deadly shooting.

An armed man entered the court earlier this week and opened fire in the corridors with a semi-automatic weapon.

A taxi operator from Vrygrond was killed in the suspected hit.

The deceased was facing murder and attempted murder charges and his attorney confirmed that the court’s metal detectors were not working.

Committee chairperson, Xola Nqola, said that he was struggling to fathom how an armed gunman breached security and entered the court.

“It is shocking that a person can be murdered inside a court. We are going to take time and visit the court and see the security features that are there and then take a decision on the preventative steps that need to be taken.”

Police are yet to make a breakthrough in their investigation into the shooting.
