Inside the Santiago Bernabeu with Percy Tau

Fists in the air and a roar from a small section of their travelling supporters, what was eventually a hard-fought draw felt like a win for Percy Tau and his Club Brugge teammates on Tuesday night at the Bernabéu.

And why wouldn’t it be – minnows compared to Europe’s powerhouse at the Santiago Bernabéu in Group A of the Champions League, the little club from Belgium were 2-0 up at the iconic venue against Real Madrid at half-time. South Africa’s Tau had caught the eye. Back home in Mzansi, there were moans and groans when the nimble-footed Bafana Bafana talisman was an unused substitute in Brugge’s opening fixture of the world’s most premium club football competition at home against a Radamel Falcao-led Galatasaray.

Following the 0-0 draw, Tau’s fans – the South Africans in the majority – bombarded Brugge’s official Twitter page to remind manager Phillipe Clement that he’d left his potential match winner on the bench.

It’s not that the coach, who made over 250 appearances for Brugge himself, had now allowed Tau’s fans to dictate his line-up, but the Belgian did come to his senses two weeks later by throwing in the attacker to use his skill, pace and brains to trouble Sergio Ramos, Nacho, Raphael Varane and Daniel Carvajal.

Masterstroke – Brugge were a goal up nine minutes into the game, and Tau had supplied the assist for Emmanuel Bonaventure, the Nigeria striker who added a second half an hour later to stun the Bernabéu. Such is the quality in that Madrid team that they managed to come back to clinch a draw, but it did not matter. Brugge had achieved the impossible and Tau, along with his teammates, was a hero!
