Mzansi Celebs

List of SA celebrities who are lesbians

It really takes courage to open up about your s.e.xuality and be ready to face the consequences that come with such a decision.

In Mzansi, the LGBTQI+ community is celebrated and constitutionally protected which makes it one of the few African countries that are accepting of all its citizens despite their sexuality. Although the community still faces discrimination, positive steps towards making the country and all of its institutions inclusive have been taken.

Just a couple of years ago, a woman coming out as a lesbian or anything other than straight would have been instant career suicide but little by little, brave women in South Africa are starting to live their lives out loud and proud and today, we celebrate them for these courageous acts of being fully themselves in a world that is not always kind.

Here are some of our favourite lesbian stars:

1. Nomsa Buthelezi

Our favourite Gomora Diva was thrust into the spotlight a decade ago when she bagged an acting gig on Abo Mzala and since then, she has solidified herself as one of South Africa’s most loved stars. After joining Our Perfect Wedding as a host, the star’s fame grew and shortly after that, the mom came out as a lesbian.

A couple of months later, the beauty married her partner, Zandile Shezi and the two have been in matrimonial bliss ever since. It has not been an easy journey for Nomsa, in 2021, she took to her Instagram to talk about the discrimination she faces as a lesbian woman, she said she encounters a lot of homophobic people who do not want to educate themselves on sexuality, “Have you ever been down but you keep Smiling? I go through homophobic slurs almost daily, but they never sat down with me and to know my SEXUALITY is not a Disease.”

2. Simphiwe Dana

Talented musician and actress, Simphiwe Dana is one of Mzansi’s most sought after talents. Her distinctive voice and style set her apart from her peers and that has made her into an international phenomenon. The beauty who has two children from a previous relationship has always had rumours about her sexuality in the media and in 2020, the Ndiredi hitmaker came out as a lesbian and also revealed that she is engaged to her partner, Pumeza Matshikiza.

3. Mandisa Nduna

Mandisa Nduna is most popularly known for her role in Hustle and the thespian is still growing in the entertainment industry, it is only a matter of time before she becomes a household name. Not only is Mandisa super talented and versatile, but her presence in the industry evokes a lot of conversations in homes about sexuality and gender.
