How to stop sensitive WhatsApp images from appearing in your phone’s gallery

How to stop sensitive WhatsApp images from appearing in your phone’s gallery. This is worse if you are a member of many WhatsApp groups. Some people like to send graphic pictures from the scenes of accidents while some may even send lewd images, although, for the most part,  this is usually by accident rather than by design.

If you use the auto-download media feature on WhatsApp you may occasionally get annoyed, shocked or angry with some of the pictures and videos that would have been downloaded from WhatsApp into your phone’s gallery.

If you have been wondering how to stop photos and videos from automatically saving in your phone’s gallery so that your gallery remains “clean”, do not worry, there are several methods you can use to do so.

To stop media from all your individual chats and groups from being saved

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap More options

WhatsApp-More-Options

  1. Select Settings
  2. Select Chats
  3. Turn off Media visibility.

When you turn off media visibility, all images/videos that WhatsApp downloads will no longer appear in the phone’s gallery.

The images/videos will still remain on the phone, however,  and users who know what they are doing can still display them. The feature is useful if you want to keep your gallery clean.

To stop images/video from a particular individual or group from being saved

  1. Open the individual chat or group whose images/video you don’t want to appear in your phone’s gallery.
  2. Tap More options
  3. Select View contact or Group info.
    • Alternatively, tap the contact’s name or group subject.
  4. Select Media visibility
  5. Select No when the “Do you want to show newly downloaded media from this chat in your phone’s gallery” prompt is displayed.
  6. Select OK to complete the process.

New media that is sent to you by that particular contact or group will still get downloaded by WhatsApp but will not be displayed in the phone’s Gallery application anymore.

Creating a .nomedia file

Alternatively, you can create a .nomedia file in the WhatsApp images folder. Please note this will hide all your WhatsApp photos from your phone’s gallery.

  1. Download ES File Explorer from the Google Play Store.
  2. In ES File Explorer, go to Images/WhatsApp Images/.
  3. Tape the Menu button followed by New  followed by File
  4. Create a file named .nomedia, including the period.

If you want to view your photos in your phone’s gallery later, simply delete the nomedia file.
