Western Cape police given tight deadline to resolve ongoing gang violence

Western Cape police have been given a tight deadline to resolve the ongoing gang violence in the province.

Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili was in the Western Cape on Friday to address the ongoing shootings that have claimed several lives.

She also expressed concern about the number of illegal firearms on the streets.

Mosikili said that the Western Cape contributed to the largest bulk of arrests made last year.

Of the 250,000 people taken into custody 200,000 of the arrests were made in the province.

According to the Mosikili, over 3,000 firearms were recovered on the Cape Flats alone during the same period.

She said that it was no secret that some police officers were contributing to the escalating crime.

“But we have laws. Why do we even speak of gangs if we are police officers? Because we are supposed to respond and make sure that we have the gang of law enforcers.”

Mosikili added that it’s unfortunate that some police officers were not committed to the service they signed up for.
