The Western Cape government has declared a State of Disaster due to the damage from last week’s storms.
Some rain is still expected this week, but it won’t be as heavy.
Diener says it will take a few days to fully assess the damage as the water levels are still so high.
Western Cape Disaster Management head, Colin Deiner:
“We have fortunately not seen the kind of destruction that we saw in the floods last year.”
The National Disaster Centre on Friday afternoon declared a provincial disaster, meaning the Western Cape can unlock funding and resources to respond.
About 96,000 people have been affected by the storms so far.
