Western Cape ANC set to install new leadership in much-delayed conference this weekend

The African National Congress (ANC) in Western Cape will finally install new leadership at the weekend, after years of dysfunctionality.

Nominations for the party’s top positions opened as 700 delegates prepare for the much-delayed conference, beginning at the Cape Town Convention Centre on Friday.

The party said reducing support for the Democratic Alliance (DA) to under 50% is its main aim while it prepares to discuss the possibility of coalitions in 2024 at the weekend conference.

Western Cape is the ANC’s smallest province by numbers and is the first and only province to be lost to the DA, in control since 2009.

With new incoming leadership, the party said 2024’s elections would form part of the conference discussion.

Chairperson of the interim provincial committee (IPC) Lerumo Kalako said the ANC was confident, and the time was ripe for the DA to be toppled.

“We have also been able to wrestle the DA out of 15 municipalities. Its many coalitions have collapsed in favour of ANC-led coalitions.

“We have held the DA accountable at the legislature while indeed more work still needs to be done to expose the DA for the farce that it is.”

A former ANC member of the Executive Council (MEC) and current member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL), Cameron Dugmore, is currently touted to be elected chairperson, but could face off against the likes of ANC member of Parliament Richard Dyantyi and Kalako.

Former Hawks head Anwar Dramat is expected to lead the nominations for provincial secretary.
