John Steenhuisen calls Ramaphosa the weakest president SA has ever had
Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has taken a jab at President Cyril Ramaphosa’s administration as political parties double down on election tactics ahead of the 2024 polls.
Steenhuisen updated South Africa on the party’s ‘moonshot pact’ on Saturday.
Ramaphosa’s ‘new dawn’ presidency has been marred by criticism of a stagnant economy, failing state institutions, corruption, and policy uncertainty.
But Steenhuisen said Ramaphosa cannot be excused from his own administration’s poor service delivery.
This is as some Ramaphosa-backers have often come out in his defence, instead blaming his predecessors for handing over a malfunctioning administration.
“This is the legacy that President Cyril Ramaphosa now leaves behind as he limps lamely towards the exit. We are a country betrayed by the weakest president South Africa has ever had. The reality is that they can still get much, much worse.”
The main opposition wants to split the African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) votes in the hotly contested elections by banding together with at least 15 other parties in a massive coalition agreement.
Steenhuisen believes the party’s so-called moonshot pact will deal a blow to the ANC.
“But the prospect of a united opposition setting aside our petty differences in service of South Africa can offer a powerful ray of light during this dark winter. For the very first time since 1994, the ANC is likely to lose next year’s election. Victory is within our grasp, if we only have the courage to now seize the opportunity.”
