North West communities dig deep for water supply

Potable water remains an unfulfilled need for many communities across the country.

In the North West, Magalies Water says surface water is limited so communities rely on boreholes.

But, these are vulnerable to vandalism.

“Most communities are getting water through boreholes. The surface water is very limited in this province,” said Sandile Ngcobo.

“What then happens is boreholes are susceptible to people vandalizing them, of course some of them are being run by diesel and that diesel tends to disappear and the boreholes get vandalized and the communities start suffering.

“But those that linked into a water treatment plant like this, the areas of Rustenburg and the platinum belt, they are, I must say, fortunate.”
