Water shortages in Durban due to failed pump

Several parts of Durban have been without a steady supply of water since 11 November due to a failed shaft pump at the Durban Heights Water Treatment facility.

Authorities at Umgeni Water say it will take weeks for the issue to be solved.

Meanwhile, an SIU report has raised red flags about contracts awarded by Umgeni Water.

One expert says the Water and Sanitation Department is failing to execute its role as regulator.

Water expert professor Anthony Turton said: “In normal democracy that’s called extortion and we need not look no further than do a Google search of big construction companies on the JSE and you’ll find they’re in serious difficulty because of the construction mafia.

“The construction mafia is a group of gangsters who goes around causing all sorts of drama to your project and then come and offer you a solution and they say if you pay us we’ll make all your problems go away, so this is extortion, it’s a breakdown to the rule of law.

“All this speaks to the issue of governance and breakdown of the authority of the Department of Water and Sanitation in its role as regulator,” he said.

“We’ve been working and engaging with parliament on the need to create an independent water regulator because without that we’re not gonna get these problems sorted out.

“It’s clear the Water and Sanitation Department is unable to execute its role as a regulator in the way that we require it.”
