Voting set to begin in hotly-contested Ward 73 by-election in Chatsworth

Voting will take place in the hotly-contested Ward 73 by-election in Chatsworth in the eThekwini region on Wednesday.

The by-election follows the resignation of Ronnie Pillay, a former Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor who is now with the African National Congress (ANC).

During the ANC’s national working committee’s (NWC) recent visit to KwaZulu-Natal, party president Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed former DA members to the ANC in the area.

But the DA claimed those weren’t their members.

The ANC is hoping to win Ward 73 in Wednesday’s by-election, as this could earn them a seat in the municipality.

Since 2021, the party has had a below 50% representation in the council.

ANC eThekwini regional secretary Musa Nciki said it was the main reason they asked its party president to campaign in the area a week ago.

“We are definitely contesting there, and you must know we are very serious. We brought in the president for our campaign. We brought our big guns for that campaign.

“We are very serious on winning that ward. It is going to change our campaign in the municipality.”

But the DA’s Dean MacPherson was confident the party would maintain control of the ward.

“Expecting the ANC to fix what is broken is ludicrous, so that is why we believe the community will stand with the DA and will stand by the DA.”

Voting is expected to start from 10 am on Wednesday.
