Human and economic blow to the Western Cape in wake of floods

The Western Cape Provincial Treasury is assessing the financial implications of the province’s flooding.

The flooding has resulted in at least two fatalities, displacement of thousands of people, and extensive infrastructure damage.

Preliminary assessments from the Agriculture Department indicate damages ranging from R 750 million to R 1 billion.

Western Cape officials had anticipated heavy rains but did not foresee the extent of infrastructure damage caused by the floods.

Efforts are currently underway to address the road collapse in the Citrusdal area and other affected towns.

The agricultural sector has also suffered significant losses.
