Ten out of 12 people accused in the University Fort Hare (UFH)’s corruption and fraud case have been granted R50,000 bail each.
The suspects appeared at the Alice Magistrates Court sitting in Dimbiza earlier on Thursday, with two others remanded in custody until the next court appearance.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it decided not to oppose bail for the 10 suspects anymore, following some developments in the case.
A total of 25 people have been arrested in connection with several crimes – including murder and attempted murder – at the university since last year.
“The State is now opposing bail against three of the 15 persons, who are Terrence Joubert, Anwar Khan and Isaac Plaatjies who has since abandoned his bail application,” said NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali.
