The University of Cape Town (UCT) says it will begin its selection process of a new vice-chancellor soon, after applications for the top post closed on Wednesday.
The position has been vacant since Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng left under a dark cloud almost a year ago.
In March last year, Professor Daya Reddy took over the reigns as interim vice-chancellor, and was only expected to serve a term of about six months.
The university’s council said it was looking for a candidate that would steer the institution towards its vision of excellence, transformation, and sustainability.
The institution is aiming to strengthen its position of being the number one university in Africa.
The UCT council said the next vice-chancellor had to be someone who could provide strategic leadership, and ensure that the university continued to contribute towards addressing complex and critical challenges facing the country and the world at large.
The council added that the selection process would be fair, transparent, and adhere to the university’s recruitment policies.
