Unions vote to down tools at Sibanye-Stillwater

Mineworkers at unions, AMCU, and the NUM have voted in favour of a strike at Sibanye-Stillwater’s gold operations following a wage deadlock.

The unions demanded an increase of R1,000 per year for three years. Sibanye’s final offer to Category 4 to 8 employees was an increase of R700 each year.

A third union, Solidarity, said earlier this week that its members had accepted the firm’s offer. The potential strike comes as Sibanye – which is also the world’s largest platinum miner recorded R33 billion profit last year, thanks to a surge in commodity prices.

One union says they’re are set on downing tools next Thursday but will sit with management one more time on Monday
