Police investigating escape of almost 70 undocumented foreign nationals at Lindela Repatriation Centre
The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) says it is assessing a contract with facilities management company Enviromongz at the Lindela Repatriation Centre.
This decision was informed by the escape of 69 foreign nationals on Sunday, and a subsequent attempted escape the following day.
The department said there was a standoff between the group and the security team at the centre in Krugersdorp.
It added that it is working with other law enforcement agencies to track the escapees.
At the time of the escape, the DHA said, the facility was holding 1,521 undocumented foreign nationals set to be deported to various countries including Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique.
Earlier in the week, the Lindela Repatriation Centre was rocked by another attempted escape that resulted in one injured deportee and two security officers arrested.
Police are investigating both incidents.
