UN horrified by allegations of employees involved in Israel attack

The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his horror by serious allegations that several employees attached to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees, were involved in the horrific attacks on Israel on 7 October.

The Commissioner-General of UNRWA Philippe Lazzarini has since taken a decision to immediately terminate the contracts of these staff members and launched an investigation in order to establish the truth without delay. An urgent and comprehensive review on UNRWRA would now be conducted.

Lazzarin’s statement says that any UNRWA employees who were involved in acts of terror would be held accountable, including through criminal prosecution, while reiterating the agency’s condemnation in the strongest possible terms of the abhorrent attacks of 7 October.

The US State Department said it had temporarily paused funding for UNRWA while a review of the allegations was under way.

Lazzarini said Israeli authorities provided UNRWA with information about the alleged involvement of at least 12 of the agency’s employees, warning that anyone who betrayed the fundamental values of the UN also betrayed the people they serve in Gaza and across the broader region.

Meanwhile, the International Court of Justice earlier ordered Israel to take action to prevent the commission of acts of genocide in its war in Gaza.
