Ukraine urges world court to impose reparations over Russia war

Russia‘s air defence systems destroyed Ukraine-launched drones over the Belgorod and Oryol regions late on Monday, the Russian defence ministry said, with local officials saying that there was no destruction or casualties. The ministry, in posts on the Telegram messaging platform, said that two drones were destroyed over the Oryol region in Russia’s southwest and one over the Belgorod region, which border with Ukraine.

Governors of both of the regions said there was no destruction or casualties. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. Ukraine urgently needs air defences, including ammunition, spare parts and maintenance for the systems the Ukrainian military already has, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has said in an interview with Reuters.

Stoltenberg said the war, now well into its second year, was a “war of attrition” but not a stalemate, given the gains Ukraine has made in the counteroffensive it began in June.

“If we want an end to the war, if we want a just and lasting peace, then military support to Ukraine is the right way,” Stoltenberg said on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“There is an urgent need for air defence, not only new systems, but also ammunition, maintenance, spare parts … We see that air defence is saving lives every day in Ukraine and we need to sustain the air defence systems of Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of carrying out “genocide” by abducting children, in a plea for solidarity to the United Nations General Assembly.

“Those children in Russia are taught to hate Ukraine and all ties with their families are broken. And this is clearly a genocide,” Zelensky said. Wearing his trademark military fatigues, Zelensky accused Russia of using both energy and food as a way to pressure the world.
