FANS of Sbu Buthelezi were worried after he disappeared from radio for almost a month.
The absence of the popular Ukhozi FM DJ led to rumours that he’d been suspended, which he’s now denied.
When a local publication contacted him recently, he said: “I don’t talk to newspapers, especially about matters relating to my radio job. I’m not suspended but for further comment, please contact the SABC.”
During his absence, his Sunday show Indumiso was hosted by Thembeka Zondo-Cele. It’s also been alleged that Buthelezei needed time to deal with personal matters.
In response to a fan on Twitter, Buthelezi said he’ll be back on Sunday, 6 March. On Saturday, a fan on Twitter said to him in Zulu: “We looked for you during the month of love but we never saw you.”
Buthelezi replied: “Bless you, Khumbuza. Asidibane next Sunday (let’s meet next Sunday).”
Buthelezi made headlines in January 2019 when he was shot six times in an attempted hijacking. He had parked his Ford Ranger in Pietermaritzburg, KZN, when the incident happened.
The SABC confirmed Buthelezi was off the air due to personal reasons. Spokeswoman Gugu Ntuli said: “The SABC would like to state that Mr Sbu Buthelezi is an independent contractor and is still contracted by the corporation. Mr Buthelezi is currently off the schedule due to personal reasons and he will be back on air on Sunday.”
