The Tygerberg International Office (TIO) of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) of Stellenbosch University is a well-established entity which provides administrative and operational support services to foreign undergraduate elective students, postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, staff and visitors. The FMHS has recently expanded the TIO’s mandate to align it with the broader internationalisation imperatives of the institution, and is looking for a dynamic, strategically-minded leader to head the office and support the Vice Dean: Research in the implementation of the Internationalisation Strategy of the FMHS.

Duties:

Providing advice on internationalisation, and s
upporting the Vice Dean: Research in the further development and implementation of the FMHS Internationalisation Strategy;
Liaising with and supporting the efforts of Stellenbosch University International (SUI) in advancing the institution’s internationalisation efforts, as part of the broader SUI Management
Team;

Assisting in the establishment, development and promotion of
sustainable bilateral and multilateral international alliances, strategic partnerships and collaborations in support of the
academic project,
and managing partnership agreements;

Developing an effective approach for coordinated participation in regional and international networks;
Liaising with the Marketing and Communications Office to ensure marketing of internationalisation efforts and e
nhancement of the international profile, visibility and prestige of the
Faculty;

Coordinating high level visits from and to foreign institutions;
Being willing and available to undertake international travel when required;
Promoting the internationalisation agenda across the Faculty in all relevant activities (including teaching and research);
Enhancing the international mobility of students and staff, inter alia through international student exchange programmes and rotations and facilitating administration of student and
staff exchange;

Assisting in the establishment of an attractive, culturally diverse and welcoming environment for international students, staff and visitors;
Ensuring high quality strategic, operational, and human resources management of the TIO;
Ensuring effective, responsible, and efficient management and utilisation of the TIO’s finances;
Managing administrative and operational services related to incoming international students, postdoctoral fellows and staff, by overseeing the following functions of the TIO:
o

Liaising with academic environments with regards to the placement of undergraduate elective students;

o

Liaising with Student Support Services with regards to applications and registration of foreign students;

o

Facilitating the applications and registration of foreign postgraduate students;

o

Liaising with the Postgraduate Office and the Doctoral Office in supporting joint qualifications with international partners;

o

Liaising with various professional bodies in South Africa (such as the HPCSA and SANC) with regards to registration of foreign students and staff;

o

Liaising with Tygerberg Hospital relating to acceptance of postgraduate elective students and supernumerary registrars;

o

Liaising with the Department of Home Affairs with regards to visa applications of foreign students and staff;

o

Liaising with the National Department of Health on all matters pertaining to international staff and students;

o

Assisting with the evaluation of international qualifications of foreign students and staff;

o

Rendering logistical and administrative support to foreign students, including support for accommodation.

Acting as secretariat of the FMHS Internationalisation Committee, and representing the FMHS on the Institutional Advisory Committee on Internationalisation;
Responding to internationalisation-related policy documents, drafting proposals and reports, and implementing policies.
Maintaining and updating a database of internationalisation activities and reporting periodically to the Faculty Management on progress with internationalisation efforts in the FMHS.

Required Skills

Candidate Requirements
A relevant Master’s degree;
At least five years’ relevant experience (preferably within an international office or similar structure, or involved in international partnerships; and preferably in a higher education
environment);

Excellent organisational and management skills, with at least three years’ management experience;
Proven capacity to provide dynamic and strategic leadership in the area of internationalisation;
Proven ability to develop and sustain strategically relevant institutional partnerships and alliances at an international level
;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing;
Previous experience with international travel.

Recommendation:

A PhD or equivalent;
Proven international higher education experience (time spent abroad at international higher education institutions);
Sound knowledge of, and insight into, the higher education sector, as well as national and international realities in this sector;
Proficiency in two or more official languages of South Africa;
·Ability to speak a foreign language.
