Two Arrested in Barberton During Crackdown on Illegal Mining

Two people arrested are linked to Illegal Mining operations. Members deployed under Operation Vala Umgodi continue to make progress in Mpumalanga, with two suspects, aged 32 and 33, arrested at a farm in Barberton during a recent crackdown on illegal mining.

According to police, the arrests followed an intelligence-driven operation conducted by crime combat, proactive policing, and anti-illegal mining units on Saturday, 17 May 2025. During the operation, two metal detectors—valued at approximately R750,000—were confiscated.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 19 May 2025, facing charges of trespassing, conspiracy to commit illicit mining, and contravention of the Immigration Act.
Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, commended the ongoing efforts of Operation Vala Umgodi members.
“These continued operations are having a significant impact in curbing illegal mining activities across the province,” said Mkhwanazi.
