Twenty police officials murdered in the third quarter of 2023/2024

Hawks Head Godfrey Lebeya says 20 police officials were murdered in the third quarter of the 2023/2024 financial year and 12 arrests were made.

Lebeya has briefed the media in Pretoria. He says the Hawks have secured 720 arrests for various serious crimes including fraud and cash-in-transit heists.

Lebeya says out of those arrested in connection with police killings, three were convicted and sentenced to lengthy jail terms.

“An attack on a police official is an attack on the state, and the death of one police official, who is the protector of all the people in South Africa, is unacceptable. While 22 police officials were murdered in the third quarter, 12 off-duty and 10 on duty [were killed].

Twelve arrests were effected. Furthermore, three accused persons were convicted and sentenced to share four life imprisonment and 38 years imprisonment terms
