Tshwane municipality counting losses in revenue collected at landfill sites

The Tshwane municipality is counting losses in revenue uncollected at landfill sites.

The municipality has lost at least R29 million in the last decade.

The capital city currently has about four sites. However, a recent report tabled to the council has revealed the metro is not getting as much money as it should from them.

There are several reasons the capital city is losing revenue at its landfill sites.

Several council reports have cited an outdated billing system, poor security and non-operational weighbridges, among other reasons.

The Tshwane MMC for Environment and Agriculture Management, Ziyanda Zwane, said the city is working on digitizing its systems to improve revenue collection.

“We have a manual system that is making sure that we capture the amount of waste that they are bringing in and then we send them bills…some of these private customers are not paying after they’ve been sent those bills.”

The municipality said it generates a monthly stop list with details of private clients that owe the city and must not be allowed to dispose of waste until they have settled their accounts.
