We are not in a crisis, says Tshwane mayor

Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink says while the city owes billions of rands to its creditors, there is no crisis in the capital.

He admits there are some financial difficulties facing the metro but all that is being taken care of.

Brink says the council has been able to reduce the cumulative irregular expenditure as announced by the Auditor-General.

“I wouldn’t describe it as a crisis. The good news is that at the end of the last financial year, we were able to settle our short-term debt arrangement,” he said.

“The council was able to deal with R10-billion of the accumulated R18-billion of irregular expenditure cited by the auditor general.

“We are in a critical position but the situation is manageable. We are clear about steps being taken to improve our finances,” he said.
