Multiple Rescue Operations Amid Rising Waters
The first incident occurred at the intersection of Rabie Street and End Street, where emergency services were alerted at around 9:45 PM.
“Firefighters found a car stuck in the river with two occupants. They immediately began rescue operations and successfully rescued the two people, who were unharmed and had not sustained any injuries,” Mnguni reported.
Shortly after, another emergency was reported at the corner of Albert Street and Nellmapius Drive in the Irene Country Estate. Emergency responders were diverted from the first scene to address this second incident.
“On arrival, firefighters found another car stuck in the river with two occupants. Both individuals were rescued safely and without injuries,” Mnguni added.
Tragic Loss of Life Near Supersport Park
The third and most devastating incident occurred near Lenchen Street and West Street, close to Supersport Park Cricket Stadium. Here, a car and a motorcycle were swept away by the powerful river currents.
Emergency teams from Tshwane Fire and Rescue Operations, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) launched a coordinated search and rescue mission.
One fortunate survivor, a woman, managed to swim to safety and was found on the riverbank. However, the motorcyclist and the motorist were tragically found deceased. Their bodies were recovered by the rescue teams.
Additionally, at around 11:00 PM, another individual was rescued near the Centurion Lake Hotel, where they were holding onto a lamp post submerged by the overflowing river. Thankfully, this person was unharmed.
Safety Reminders and Emergency Contact Information
Mnguni urged residents to exercise caution during heavy rains and emphasized the importance of reporting emergencies promptly.
“When reporting an emergency, please remain calm; speak clearly; know where you are to give the correct address; and provide your correct contact number for follow-up,” he advised.
Residents are encouraged to report fire or rescue emergencies by calling 107 toll-free or, alternatively, 012 358 6300/6400.
The Aftermath of the Flooding
Friday night’s events highlighted the unpredictability and dangers of flash flooding. While several individuals were fortunate to escape unharmed, the loss of life underscores the need for vigilance during extreme weather conditions.
Emergency services continue to monitor the situation and provide support to affected communities. Mnguni also commended the collaborative efforts of the various teams involved in the rescue operations, including the SAPS divers and Gauteng EMS.
Preventive Measures and Public Awareness
As extreme weather events become more frequent, authorities are urging the public to:
- Avoid Crossing Flooded Roads or Rivers: Even seemingly shallow water can be deceptive and pose serious risks.
- Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts and warnings issued by local authorities.
- Prepare for Emergencies: Have an emergency plan in place, especially during the rainy season.
- Report Incidents Early: Prompt reporting can save lives and facilitate quicker responses.
The City of Tshwane and its emergency services remain committed to enhancing disaster response and ensuring public safety during adverse weather conditions.
