31 prisoners waiting for trial escape from custody in Pietermaritzburg

31 awaiting trial prisoners have escaped while being transported to court in Pietermaritzburg.

Police were transporting 45 prisoners when they were blocked by a double-cab bakkie.

Officers say 5 heavily armed men confronted them, forcing them to open the back of the truck.

31 managed to escape, but 9 were recaptured shortly afterwards.

Police say they will continue searching for the 22 still on the run, as well as the gunmen.
