The case against five men accused of killing Collins Chabane Mayor, Moses Maluleke, will resume on Tuesday morning at the Polokwane High Court in Limpopo. The matter was postponed due to the unavailability of the presiding judge.
Avhatakali Mulaudzi, Shumani Nemadodzi, Avhatakali Mudau, Wisani Baloyi and Tshianeo Munyai allegedly fatally shot Maluleke at his home in Xikundu, outside Malamulele, in July last year. They have been charged with murder, attempted murder, robbery and possession of unlawful firearms and ammunition.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in Limpopo, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi says the state is expected to call more witnesses on Tuesday.
In June, the state called four witnesses, including the late Mayor’s son, Ntokotoko Maluleke, and the second accused who turned state witness, Avhatakali Mulaudzi.
When testifying, Ntokoto Maluleke told the court that the bullet that hit him that fatal night is still lodged in his pelvis.
The third witness, a neighbour of the late mayor, Hlanganani Manganyi told the court how he saw five men running away from the crime scene on the night Maluleke was killed.
The fourth witness, a former girlfriend of accused number three, said that Wiseman Baloyi met with the mayor a year before the shooting, promising to do a painting job at Maluleke’s house.
The state is expected to call sixteen more witnesses during the remainder of the trial. The defence lawyer questioned the validity of evidence given by a second witness and son of the late mayor.
