Train collides with ZRP vehicle

A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) vehicle was severely damaged in Gweru today after being struck by a train at a level crossing, in an incident that has sparked renewed concern about road safety practices, particularly among law enforcement officers.

The incident involved a Mahindra police vehicle driven by a ZRP officer who, according to preliminary reports, failed to follow standard procedures at the railway crossing. A senior ZRP spokesperson emphasized the dangers of misjudging a train’s speed and the irreversible consequences that can result from even a moment of inattention.

“All drivers, including law enforcement officers, must come to a complete stop at every railway crossing,” the spokesperson stated. “Look both ways, listen for approaching trains, and only proceed when absolutely certain it is safe. Trains cannot stop quickly. Do not attempt to beat them.”

The statement underscores a growing concern about negligence at train crossings, which continue to pose a significant risk to public safety. Unlike road vehicles, trains operate on fixed tracks and require much longer distances to stop, making it critical that all motorists follow established crossing protocols.

The Train Safety Awareness Zimbabwe campaign, a local road safety initiative, has responded by calling for a nationwide education drive focused on the dangers of railway crossings. “We’ve now seen two serious incidents involving police vehicles and trains in less than six months,” said a spokesperson for the campaign. “This is no longer an isolated issue—it’s a pattern that requires immediate attention. Authorities have confirmed that an internal investigation into the Gweru incident is underway. The inquiry will examine whether the officer involved was trained in proper railway crossing procedures and if any mechanical failure played a role.
