Train collides with ZRP vehicle

A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) vehicle was severely damaged in Gweru today after being struck by a train at a level crossing, in an incident that has sparked renewed concern about road safety practices, particularly among law enforcement officers.

The incident involved a Mahindra police vehicle driven by a ZRP officer who, according to preliminary reports, failed to follow standard procedures at the railway crossing. Witnesses state that the officer did not stop to check for oncoming trains before attempting to cross the tracks, resulting in a direct collision.

Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported, but the police vehicle sustained significant structural damage. The collision also caused a temporary disruption to both rail and road traffic in the area, as emergency services responded to the scene.

This marks the second such train-related incident involving a ZRP vehicle in 2025. In January, a Ford Ranger used by the police was also struck by a train under nearly identical circumstances. In that case, too, the officer failed to observe basic railway crossing protocols. The recurrence of these incidents within a short span has raised serious concerns about driver behavior at level crossings, especially among those tasked with enforcing traffic laws.

In response to the latest crash, ZRP officials have reiterated the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and treating all railway crossings with caution and respect. A senior ZRP spokesperson emphasized the dangers of misjudging a train’s speed and the irreversible consequences that can result from even a moment of inattention.

All drivers, including law enforcement officers, must come to a complete stop at every railway crossing,” the spokesperson stated. “Look both ways, listen for approaching trains, and only proceed when absolutely certain it is safe. Trains cannot stop quickly. Do not attempt to beat them.”

The statement underscores a growing concern about negligence at train crossings, which continue to pose a significant risk to public safety. Unlike road vehicles, trains operate on fixed tracks and require much longer distances to stop, making it critical that all motorists follow established crossing protocols.

Train Accident Raises Alarm Over Road Safety Compliance Among Law Enforcement

The Train Safety Awareness Zimbabwe campaign, a local road safety initiative, has responded by calling for a nationwide education drive focused on the dangers of railway crossings. The group is advocating for mandatory refresher courses for all professional drivers, increased signage and lighting at crossings, and stricter enforcement of traffic rules related to trains.

We’ve now seen two serious incidents involving police vehicles and trains in less than six months,” said a spokesperson for the campaign. “This is no longer an isolated issue—it’s a pattern that requires immediate attention. If our own law enforcers are not adhering to safety protocols, how can we expect the public to?”

Authorities have confirmed that an internal investigation into the Gweru incident is underway. The inquiry will examine whether the officer involved was trained in proper railway crossing procedures and if any mechanical failure played a role. Disciplinary measures may follow depending on the findings.

Experts note that incidents like these are preventable with proper education and attention. They also highlight the need for more visible safety features at level crossings, including warning lights, gates, and audible alerts. In many parts of Zimbabwe, crossings still rely heavily on driver vigilance due to a lack of automated safety infrastructure.

This recent train collision serves as a powerful reminder of the risks that come with complacency at railway crossings. As Zimbabwe continues to invest in both rail and road infrastructure, safety must remain a top priority. Whether driving a private vehicle or a government-issued one, all motorists share the responsibility to prevent avoidable accidents by respecting the rules of the road—and the railway.

With law enforcement under scrutiny following repeated train-related collisions, this incident may serve as a turning point in how railway safety is addressed both in public policy and daily practice. Only through greater awareness, accountability, and proactive measures can future tragedies be averted.
