Top traffic cop killed while having tlof tlof with girlfriend in the bushes
The case against two men linked with the murder of a Mpumalanga senior traffic cop has been postponed to 22 March for legal representation.
The suspects made a brief appearance in the White River Magistrate Court on Wednesday, 15 March.
Charles Mbungeni Mabuza (35) and Harward Malume Mashego (38) are facing charges of murder and possession of unlicensed firearms.
The two are alleged to have been part of a group of men who shot and killed Bushbuckridge municipality Chief Traffic Officer Judas Chiloane on Saturday, 11 March, in the bushes between Hazyview and Graskop.
It is reported that Chiloane was with his lady friend when the incident occurred.
It is alleged that the suspects managed to disarm Chiloane and used his gun to shoot him.
The 60-year-old was allegedly in his underwear at the time, and sustained injuries after being shot.
In a statement, police indicated that the victim went to the bushes with a girlfriend, but was interrupted by unknown suspects who fired several shots at him.
Chiloane tried to speed off with his white Ford Ranger vehicle for about 124m but succumbed to injuries he sustained.
It is reported that the suspects took his firearm and other items before fleeing the scene, and the female victim went to the police to report the matter.
Chiloane’s uniform was found apparently on the ground where the shooting took place, and he was found dead on the steering wheel of his bakkie.
Provincial Hawks spokeswoman Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said another suspect is on the run.
“The team is tracing him. The second suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and was not present during the murder. The investigation is continuing to establish his relationship with the alleged murderer. The team is busy with linkages,” she said.
