Gauteng Education MEC lauds quality of matric results in township schools

The Gauteng Department of Education has lauded schools in townships for changing negative perceptions about the quality of education delivered in their schools.

MEC Matome Chiloane was addressing top matric learners who excelled during their NSC exams last year, stakeholders in the education sector, and parents gathered at the Microsoft Offices in Bryanston on Friday.

Gauteng public schools achieved an 85.4% pass rate for 2023.

According to Chiloane, township schools in the province are now competing neck and neck with former Model C schools and those in suburbia.

Imbali Combined High School in Orange Farm and Kgatoentle Secondary School in Ga-Rankuwa are among some of the township schools that achieved a 100% pass rate – they both saw a 95% bachelor pass among students.

Top-performing students from several township schools in the province will meet with Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi on Sunday to accept bursaries, laptops, and other materials to prepare them for university.
