KZN’s Tongaat hit by strong winds, causing damage to homes and infrastructure

A tornado has ruined many parts of Tongaat, in northern Durban, as extreme conditions continue in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Cooperative Governance Department said that five people had died in the metro and others were injured and hospitalised.

People’s homes were damaged and trees and powerlines were uprooted, blocking roads.

The SA Weather Service predicted a level four alert for disruptive rains along the coast of the province, with the possibility of flooding.

Forecaster Lehlogonolo Thobela: “There have been a number of videos circulating about a tornado in KwaZulu-Natal. Considering the observations and squall lines of thunderstorms that have been around the area, it is possible that a tornado occurred in KwaZulu-Natal.”

Premier Nomusa Dube Ncube is expected to visit the area for assessment and provision of disaster relief.
