Tom Holland Discusses Overcoming Alcohol Addiction

The perils of substance abuse in Hollywood, or really in any artistic craft, are tragic and mostly well-known. Some artists keep their struggles private, but recently Tom Holland opened up about his own problems with alcohol addiction. During an interview with Jay Shetty, the Spider-Man actor, who can now be seen on The Crowded Room on Apple TV+, admitted he struggled with alcohol. The actor even said how he felt “enslaved” by his addiction.

“I was definitely addicted to alcohol. I’m not shying away from that at all. It’s interesting. I didn’t one day wake up and say, ‘I’m giving up drinking’. I, just like many Brits, had a very, very boozy December. I’ve always been able to drink a lot,” he said.

The actor eventually gave up drinking for Dry January in 2022, which prompted the decision to continue sobriety until his birthday in June. When he reached that date, he felt the happiest he’s ever been.
I could sleep better. I could handle problems better. Things that would go wrong on set that would normally set me off, I could take in my stride,” he said. “I had so much better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter.”

Holland has now been sober for a year and a half and he emphasizes that this is the best he’s felt and no longer feels enslaved by his addiction.

“Once I really started feeling the health benefits and once I really started feeling like my full self, I was like ‘Oh my God, this is the best’,” he said. “I don’t want to be that person who’s saying ‘You should get sober, you should get sober!’ If I could encourage someone to drink less, that would be great.”

He also discussed the culture of Hollywood and how that piece of his career isn’t something he enjoys.

“I do not like Hollywood. It is not for me and the business really scares me. I understand I am a part of that business and I enjoy my kind of interactions with it, but that said I am always looking for ways to kind of remove myself from it to kind of just live as a normal life as possible,” the actor said. “It definitely has been an ongoing thought which is don’t lose yourself. I’ve seen so many people come before me and lose themselves and I’ve had friends who I’ve grown up with that aren’t friends of mine anymore because they’ve lost themselves to this business. I’m just really keen on to focus on what makes me happy.”

Holland recently commented that he will be taking off a year from acting to recharge after being not just one of the starts in The Crowded Room, but also one of the show’s producers.
