Finally! Deborah Fraser to be buried

Mzansi gospel giant Deborah Fraser will finally be laid to rest on Tuesday, 24 May. She was supposed to be buried at Lala Kahle Cemetery in Hillcrest, west of Durban, on Saturday, 21 May. But her family was forced to return her body to the mortuary as her grave was flooded by heavy rain.

Family spokeswoman Busi Shibodze said: “We didn’t bury Deborah on Saturday because of the heavy rains that started on Saturday morning. The undertaker advised the family that it was not safe to go to the graveyard because the heavy rains were too strong.

“The family is busy with preparations for the burial, which they will do privately with the pastor.”

Deborah’s funeral service, which was held at The Station Avenue, was attended by top musicians, actors and politicians, including Bishop Benjamin Dube, Sipho Makhabane, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Senzo Khumalo, Nomcebo Zikode, Khuzani Mpungose, Sipho Mbele, Thembi Nyandeni, KZN Finance MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube and Saftu secretary-general Zwelinzima Vavi.

The venue was fully packed with mourners singing goodbye songs not knowing the floods would force the family to postpone her burial.

Deborah’s band performed her hit songs with Nomcebo Zikode, while other musicians performed tribute songs.

Deborah died at the age of 56 at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto on Sunday, 15 May, leaving behind her children Nkosana and Aliah.

At the funeral service, Deborah was praised for her unique voice, having a good heart and being an honest and straight talker.
