ANC to hold virtual prayer service in honour of late Tina Joemat-Pettersson

The African National Congress (ANC) is expected to hold a virtual prayer service on Sunday in honour of the late former cabinet minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson.

The service comes on the back of reports in City Press newspaper that Joemat-Pettersson was questioned by police just days before her death.

The 59-year-old died on Monday amid claims that she was one of three ANC Members of Parliament (MPs) who solicited a bribe from suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s husband, in order to make the Section 194 inquiry into her fitness to hold office “go away”.

She will be laid to rest this coming week in a private ceremony.

The ANC is expected to hold a national memorial service in her honour in her home province of the Northern Cape on Wednesday.

“Various structures of the organization will be contacted, and we’ll appreciate that comrades come and participate in a disciplined manner in that moment of prayer in honour and memory of comrade Tina,” said ANC’s first deputy secretary-general Nomvula Mokonyane.
