Help Life 4 U Foundation by Renovating their Centre for Mandela day on 18 July, South Africans will celebrate #MandelaDay by dedicating 67 minutes to making a difference. Here’s some ideas on how to help this Mandela Day.

Help combat hunger by packing food donations for needy beneficiaries
FoodForward SA, an organisation that addresses widespread hunger by supporting more than 500 beneficiaries, is encouraging South Africans are encouraged to donate from a list of 15 discounted non-perishable items in over 550 Pick n Pay stores across the country and place it in the collection trolleys available in-store. Customers can also make a donation at till points from as little as R5.

The donated food will then be sorted on Mandela Day by volunteers at packing events across the country.

All the food collected will be delivered to one of the six packing event venues across the country for sorting by volunteers on Mandela Day before they are distributed to the respective FoodForward SA beneficiaries.

* Cape Town: Cape Town International Convention Centre

* Johannesburg: Gallagher Convention Centre, 19 Richards Drive, Midrand.

* Durban: Greyville Convention Centre, 150 Avondale Road, Greyville, Durban

* Port Elizabeth: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, 70 Prince Alfred Road, North End, Port Elizabeth

* Bloemfontein: 12 Dunlop Street, Hamilton

* Rustenburg: Karlienpark Primary, 1 Karlien Street, Karlienpark.

Get gardening and help adults with intellectual disabilities

Camphill Village, a residential facility for adults with intellectual disabilities, have planned various projects that people can get involved in, and we welcome all – individuals and companies who would like to participate. Projects include:

Alien Clearing – we have 80 hectares of alien vegetation, which we are systematically clearing and turning into pastures and vegetable fields.

Plant seedlings – we aim to plant 20 000 vegetable seedlings

Plant fruit trees – we are planning to plant 60 trees, 15 each of the following: Golden Delicious apples; Packham pears; Kakamas peaches and Dream navel oranges

Recycling Plant – Move to designated area

Herb Garden – Trenches for composting and laying of cement pavers for wheelchair access

Farm clean-up – Sort wood, scrap metal into usable and recyclable.

Sponsor a book for a learner

Read to Rise, a non-profit organisation which aims to inspire reading and to make high quality books available to young learners, will be visiting Mitchells Plain Primary School and Woodville Primary Schools in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town. They require funds for their class programme so that 309 Grade 3 learners can benefit and also receive a brand new story book to take home. The public can sponsor a learner for only R50 per learner.

Help make bread and soup

Join the Coca Cola Peninsula Beverages team at the Jenny Morris Yumcious (Cape Town) soup kitchen at the Cape Quarter Lifestyle Village in Green Point, Cape Town to assist in kneading bread or making soup for those in need.

Join them on the day for the longest bread kneading table, or assist in making soup. It happens at the Cape Quarter between 9.30am and 2.30pm.

Bring along a knife, a potato peeler, chopping board and a bag of vegetables.
