SIU sets sights on alleged fraud & corruption at Thembisa Hospital

The Special Investigating Unit says it’s confident it’ll be able to claw back the millions irregularly paid to a few well-connected individuals by Thembisa Hospital.

On Tuesday, the Hawks swooped in on the hospital in a search and seizure operation.

The allegations of serious financial mismanagement first came to light following the murder of whistleblower Babita Deokaran last year.

She had flagged more than a hundred incidents of suspected corruption within Gauteng’s health department.

Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi has made a promise to protect whistleblowers.

“We’re doing this to fulfil our commitment when she does that she would not die in vain. And we’ll do everything,” he said.

Lesufi says all those implicated in wrongdoing will not get away with it and will be made to account for their actions.
