The hunt for kidnapped billionaire intensifies

Home Affairs Minister Kangi Lugola said Mohammed Dewji was kidnapped in Dar es Salaam on Thursday morning. Mohammed Dewji, who at 43 is Africa’s youngest billionaire, was snatched by gunmen as he entered a hotel gym in the country’s economic capital.

Twenty people have been arrested as police pursue a manhunt for Africa’s youngest billionaire.

“Up until now, 20 people have been arrested,” said Lugola. He said security forces were working day and night to find him. Officials have hinted at the involvement of foreigners, saying he was taken by “whites”.

Dewji is chief executive of the MeTL Group, which operates in some 10 countries. It has interests in agriculture, insurance, transport, logistics and the food industry. According to Forbes, he’s worth $1,5 billion (R21,8 billion) and ranks seventh on the list of African billionaires. From 2005 to 2015, he served as a member of parliament.
