Public Protector slams Correctional Services over Thabo Bester prison break
The office of the Public Protector says Correctional Services officials should not escape disciplinary action.
She found authorities took too long to notify police about the Thabo Bester prison break.
He broke out of the Mangaung Correctional Centre in May 2022 after faking his own death.
Public Protector spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said the Correctional Services department has been given 30 days to respond to the Public Protector.
“They need to send a report on what measures they’ll put in place to ensure that they follow their own standard operating procedures, but importantly that they act with speed.”
