18 pupils injured after Tembisa school ceiling collapsed

A classroom ceiling collapsed during school hours injuring at least 18 pupils at the Umthambeka Primary School in Tembisa.

The Gauteng education department said the grade six pupils sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Two pupils are still recovering at medical facilities while the others are now home.

The cause of the incident is uncertain at this stage. However, Spokesperson Steve Mabona said the cause of the incident is being probed.

“The cause of the incident is uncertain at this stage. As such, we have launched an investigation into circumstances surrounding this incident. Further information will be acquired from the School Management Team, School Governing Body (SGB), and the district accordingly,” said Mabona.
