The shooting incident at Tembisa Hospital in Gauteng highlights the poor security at the country’s healthcare facilities.
That’s the view of the South African Medical Association.
This week, a 30-year-old nurse was fatally shot by her police officer boyfriend.
SAMA says unless safety is improved at healthcare facilities, the lives of healthcare professionals as well as patients will remain in danger.
The association says the security cluster needs to take responsibility for what happened.
“As SAMA we’re really hurt by this incident,” said Mvuyisi Mzukwa.
“We’ve been engaging the Department of Health in Gauteng. Not so long ago we had females stabbed in the hospital.
“The National DOH needs to ensure that staff is protected. You can’t allow a situation where police and soldiers can just come and shoot.
“The whole security cluster needs to take responsibility for what happened at that hospital.”
