SIU to freeze pension benefits of officials who left Tembisa hospital during investigation

The Special Investigative Unit says it will freeze pension benefits of officials who left Tembisa Hospital amid a corruption probe.

This comes after the Gauteng health department announced that disciplinary action was taken against graft-implicated employees.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says the process to recover financial losses has begun.

He said, “we have gotten to the bottom of the rot. We have been able to see all the transactions that were done and all the payments of skinny jeans and the other things that were there.”

“Our people have since finalized most of those investigations, we gave the report to the premier of Gauteng in December of last year.”

“At the moment, we wanted to make sure that we now have a proclamation so that we have our full powers to then make a referral but also the power to go to the special tribunal and recover all the money.”

“We’ve already done the work; we already know where what is at any given time.”

“Some of them resigned because they want to cash on the pension money and quickly run.”

“We want to freeze those pensions so that we can recover once we find that they have something to pay back.”
