Position Purpose :

The Cathodic Protection Field Technician is responsible to the CP Manager for the implementation of Transnet Pipelines C.P.

Policies and Procedures according to international and local accepted standards by providing a specialist service to Transnet

Pipelines and to other CP users (Gas).

To maintain close working relationships with other users of Cathodic Protection.

The Prevention of corrosion to Transnet Pipelines pipeline network is critical to it’s operational capabilities

Position outputs :

Plan schedule and supervise CP survey
Record data from surveys
Analyse results of CP data
Identify problems areas for CP survey
Ensure that problems are rectified
Corrective action planning
Analyse results of CP data
Identify problem areas
Corrective action planning and scheduling
Record follow up data and problems received with respect to rectifier problems from electricians
Record keeping/Reporting/Admin
Maintain and update records on CP test points and cross Bonds
Compile and submit monthly reports and report on investigations carried out.
Submit 2 per annum CP survey reports
Keep up to date records of CP surveys, rectifier inspections, insulating flanges and interference tests.
Document and see to implementation of policies, procedures, standards and specification
Input to budget compilation
Documentation and reports to administer/maintain
Train, mentor and supervise CP Electricians
Inspect work executed by Electricians for standard and compliance to specification
Provide expert knowledge, inputs regarding CP aspects on Technical upgrade
Constantly provide specialist advice and service
Provide specialised backup to CP Electricians
Audit work undertaken by CP Electricians
Provide and ensure quality assurance with respect to pipeline wrapping, pipe location, test points, etc.
Research and introduce relevant training/input to training materials and technology
Networking
Liaise with Transnet Freight Rail and Metrorail regarding stray current mitigation
Liaise with other CP users on foreign services
Keep abreast with CP developments
Attend CP corrosion meetings
Conduct inspection and liaise with landowners and occupiers with respect to repairs and rehabilitation (Electrical and CP) to
pipelines.
Staff Management
Manage staff time allocation, leave, overtime and general HR related issues
Manage KRA’s of Technicians regularly
Manage training and development of staff
Qualifications & Experience :

Qualified Electrician plus 8 years’ experience in the Cathodic Protection environment / industry.

Code 08 drivers licence (or new equivalent)
Courses and knowledge: Crossings, Operations Course, SHERQF, NOSA, SAP, Permits, Computer literate (Word, Excel,
Windows) NACE CP 2 or equivalent
Specialist knowledge and skills in:
Electrical and CP, pipeline materials, repair and replacement methods.
Sound Interpersonal skills
Sound negotiation skills
Sound conflict management
Practical knowledge with respect to implementation of SHERQF
Fluid and pipeline transportation, specifications and maintenance procedures
Understanding of DC traction
