Police Minister Bheki Cele says officers are cracking down on the recent incidents of violence in the taxi industry.
Gauteng’s Transport MEC is holding crisis talks with the taxi industry, following the torching of taxis in the Johannesburg CBD.
On Thursday, police had to beef up their numbers in Korsten in the Eastern Cape following the torching of vehicles and shops. This had been sparked by a road rage clash between a taxi driver and a businessman.
Cele says he’s still concerned, but working on a plan to defuse tensions.
He said, “I spoke this morning with business people and the leadership, they are saying things went down a little bit but crime was committed there, property was destroyed, therefore people must be arrested.”
“Five guns were taken by police and they are going to Ballistics so that we can see if they were not used to fire up there. No one was shot or killed but no private citizen is allowed to display a gun around, for that the Firearms Act needs to act on you.”
