Fear among taxi members as violence continues in Katlehong

Fear among taxi members as violence continues in Katlehong! The Katlehong People’s Taxi Association, based east of Johannesburg, has revealed that some members fear engaging with the government in talks aimed at ending the ongoing violence plaguing the industry.

This comes after the Gauteng Department of Transport urged rival taxi associations to work together to establish a peaceful way forward. The call followed yet another deadly incident in the area.

Fatal Shooting Sparks Concern

Earlier this week, a member of the Katlehong association was shot and killed, intensifying concerns about safety and fueling hesitation among members to participate in mediation efforts.

Drivers Threatened for Supporting Peace Talks

An anonymous member of the association disclosed that those willing to meet with the government or rival groups are being threatened by their peers.

“We once attended a meeting with the Zonkiziwe Association to discuss a ceasefire,” he said. “The meeting ended at 6 pm, and by 8 pm, there were ten people shot in our taxis, and two of our drivers died.”

Ongoing Tensions Undermine Peace Efforts

These violent reprisals have led to growing fear and distrust within the industry, making it difficult to achieve meaningful dialogue or long-term peace agreements.

Government officials have not yet responded to these specific allegations but continue to urge associations to prioritize safety and constructive engagement.
