Govt sends additional help to Swartland Municipality after collapse of 3 dam walls

Minister of Human Settlements Mmamoloko Kubayi has sent additional help to the Swartland Municipality in Western Cape following the collapse of three dam walls this week.

Kubayi’s office has dispatched the emergency housing team to urgently intervene and assist displaced families whose homes were flooded in the incident.

Human Settlements Spokesperson Hlengiwe Nhlabathi-Mokota said the ongoing assessment will inform interventions required for the affected households.

“There are four categories of interventions provided by the department. These include restoration, relocation, rebuilding, and repairs.”

While some residents are being housed in temporary shelters, Nhlabathi-Mokota said at least 100 people have refused to leave their homes.

“The National Home Builders Registration Council, which forms part of the disaster team currently onsite, will assess the structural integrity of damaged properties as soon as the water subsides.”
