Suspect arrested for string of theft targeting residents of old-age homes

Suspect arrested for string of theft targeting residents of old-age homes! An alleged thief who had been in hiding for several months has been arrested by the police in Mpumalanga. The suspect, identified as 51-year-old Innocent John Pretorius, was taken into custody on the evening of February 12 on charges of theft.
Details of the Alleged Crime
Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, revealed that the theft occurred in July 2024. Pretorius is accused of stealing valuable items from a 76-year-old pensioner living at an old-age home in Belfast.
“The suspect is said to have been providing a cleaning service to the institution and allegedly used the opportunity to help himself to valuables belonging to the elderly resident,” Ndubane explained.
Following the incident, a case was registered with the police. However, Pretorius managed to evade capture for several months.

Extended Criminal Allegations
The investigation suggests that Pretorius may have been involved in similar thefts at other old-age homes in the surrounding areas.
“The investigation by the police also revealed that he could be somehow involved in several incidents of a similar nature that were committed in various old-age homes around Belfast, Middelburg, Howard, and Paulpietersburg,” said Ndubane.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges, as further investigations could link Pretorius to other cases.
“At this stage, police cannot rule out possibilities that the male suspect could be fingered in other similar criminal offences carried out in areas that have not yet been mentioned,” Ndubane added.
Court Appearance and Next Steps
Pretorius appeared before the Belfast Magistrate’s Court on Friday, February 14. During his court appearance, the case was postponed to February 24, 2025, to allow for further investigations.
The accused remains in police custody until his next court date.
Police Leadership Responds
The acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, praised the arrest, highlighting its significance in reinforcing public trust in the justice system.
“The arrest of the suspect should encourage the public to continue having confidence in our justice system,” Mkhwanazi said. “People should open cases when a crime is committed so that on the day when a perpetrator is caught, then it becomes possible to charge such a suspect accordingly, thereby bringing such suspect to justice.”
A Call for Vigilance
The arrest of Pretorius comes as a reminder for communities to remain vigilant, especially in vulnerable settings such as old-age homes. Law enforcement authorities emphasized the importance of reporting crimes promptly and cooperating with investigations to ensure justice is served.
Local authorities have also urged old-age homes and similar institutions to strengthen their internal security measures. Background checks for service providers, increased surveillance, and regular monitoring of activities on the premises are among the recommendations aimed at preventing theft and similar crimes.
Community Response
Residents in Belfast and surrounding areas have expressed relief at the suspect’s capture. Several community members have voiced their hope that justice will be served and that other potential victims will also come forward to aid in the investigation.
This arrest also shines a light on the vulnerabilities faced by elderly citizens in institutional care. Advocates for senior citizens are calling for increased support, awareness, and resources to ensure their safety and well-being.
As the investigation into Pretorius’s alleged crimes continues, police are urging anyone with additional information to come forward. Authorities hope that the suspect’s arrest will be the first step in solving multiple theft cases and bringing closure to the affected families and communities.
With the case ongoing, further developments are expected as police work to establish the full scope of the suspect’s alleged criminal activities.
